The main source of underwater litter is from onshore littering, onshore litter makes up 80% of underwater litter, of that 80% total 85% is comprised of plastic material. This happens because litter is often discarded onshore and then carried by wind or water, directly into rivers and eventually into the sea.
Portrun Harbour is not immune to this issue, however underwater and shoreline litter is difficult to tackle for the Portrun Development Volunteers, hence they are very grateful for the partnership with Roscommon Sub Aqua group.
On Sunday 05th October volunteers from both groups came together to carry out an extensive litter pick. An array of litter from under the water was collected, items ranging from old tyres to mops to glass bottles to drink cans, nappies and lots more.
We ask visitors to the area to follow the “Leave No Trace” Principles:
- Plan Ahead and Prepare
- Be Considerate of Others
- Respect Farm Animals and Wildlife
- Travel and Camp Responsibly
- Leave What You Find
- Dispose of Waste Properly
- Protect Nature From Fire
Portrun Development Assoc would like to thank all volunteers who helped on the day, deserving of a special mention is the Roscommon Sub Aqua group – thanks for your help.
